1&1 week-long mail server issues

1&1 recently endured a week long mail server issue as a result of an "important update" to their mail server software.

1&1 states that no e-mail has been lost however there will be continued delays in service. A representative from the company stated there are millions of queued messages awaiting their systems to process.

The maintenance was entirely planned according to Press Chief Richard Stevenson, although there doesn't appear to have been any announcements regarding it made on their site. A large number of the 1&1 clientbase appears to have been affected by the issue. Both their SMTP and POP3 services were also down throughout the situation.

1&1 offers a complete range of web services from shared hosting to dedicated. Their guarantee is the highest product quality, top security and "unshakeable reliability".

    Bob,

    Ignore the spam above!

As far as dedicated goes it's not so much the additional resources

    that reduce downtime.

Overall it's the fact that there's only a minimal amount of sites on the server that generally helps.

What it all comes down to is the ability of those managing and monitoring it though so I'd be careful about jumping into the dedicated realm even if you can afford it.

A quality shared hosting account can guarantee the same level of uptime than a dedicated.

  1. Thanks David. Like I said, I'm new at running a web-site and it was actually

my first few days up after adding Google Analytics, so I was afraid I did something wrong to cause it. Thursday and Friday were very spotty days, sometimes I could connect, sometimes it wouldn't connect, but whatever problem they had seems to be solved. I would ask though if shared hosting causes more down time than having a dedicated server?

Until I actually have some traffic to worry about, I can't afford to pay for a dedicated server but I'm curious as other newbies may be what to expect in the future? Thanks again for checking out my web-site.

    Bob,

If you're referring to the link in your name it appears that it is loading at this time.

It's slow but it is definitely functional.

  2. Today my web-site is down (hosted by 1&1) but the e-mail is working. This is all new to me, I can't find any reports of internet outages or servers problems other than this forum. Anybody got any ideas?

If that happened to me, it would have caused far too many problems than I could handle. For the company that I run, email services are imperative to my operation. If I didn't have email services for a week, it would mean the end of my business. The amount of clients calling rather email would leave me winded. Also, not counting the amount of business I'd lose.

Appears we're having a small malfunction of the article. It will be up shortly!

    Thank you for your patience.
