Westhost has historically been very good with support; I've always had a good rapport with the techs. Pro: great price, good support, lots of tutorials on the web. VPS with ssh access allows you to be very hands-on with the server. They offer one-step installs of many popular applications. Con: No root. This makes it difficult if you want more than basic LAMP sites. As I'm moving to RoR, it has become too difficult to work with the non-standard linux. WH offers rails, but it is an old version. Summary: WH is a good entry-level VPS. Have only had one unscheduled outage in about 7 years (maintenance downtime is minimal, and always late at night when the impact is less critical for most businesses). The only drawback for me is the lack of root access, which restricts what you can install.

I've been with WestHost for several years but lately my sites have been slow way too much. Tech support used to be outstanding, but now I'm experiencing unanswered emails and idle chat boxes. Tech support, where are you? Maybe it's time to move on.

The best thing about westhost is the support. They are great. And there's also active forums and some walk throughs like sudleyplace (though a bit outdated). I got in on the 10/month plan (they always have some kind of special). My only gripe is not true root access (in ssh) and that my resources are more limited than I'd like, 128mb ram, 1% of cpu. Not sure about complaints about drupal and mediawiki. Their installer will automatically install both. I have only php5 and run both just fine. And you could install anything you want. I couldn't get ruby on rails running with mysql so I compiled it myself with the extension, works fine. Their automatic upgrades of software are usually a little bit behind the release. I sometimes think my response time is a little slow, but presumably I can fix that by modifying my apache settings (as long as I don't use too much memory). Also, they moved my vps around a few times with no problems at all. Great value for the buck.

Pros: -ssh access -all ports available -good uptime -cheap Cons: -non-standard Linux -No apt-get repository -Difficult to upgrade -No root access -Can't host MediaWiki and Drupal -Console lock-ups I've used Westhost for years. Their support staff was helpful most of the time. I liked having a Linux VPS, but when they did not use a standard version of Linux nor did they provide an apt-get repository to upgrade packages. Soon, I was stranded on older versions of software. If I wanted anything special, I had to compile and install it myself. Eventually, I wanted to try out MediaWiki, but my site was running Drupal. I needed both PHP4 (Drupal) and PHP5(MediaWiki). It just wasn't worth trying to figure it out. I left when the contract ended. Ihave no regrets!

I have been with WestHost for over 7 years now and have recommended it to many people. They have gone through many changes in those years and although some of them have been a bit bumpy they have always worked very hard to satisfy me and others I have recommended to them. They may not have all the fancy bells and whistles that other hosting companies offer but I stay with them because of their support and long term reliability. Other companies may come and go but I feel WestHost is here for the long haul.

Westhost was good until recently. Then I participated in their beta upgrade, and it messed up my account information. They erroneously accuse me of using 152% of my alloted disk space (when in actuality I don't use more than 50%, which one of their reps confirmed). Then they tried to coerce me into getting a better package (translate: more expensive) instead of fixing the problem. I'm switching soon.

Been with them for quite a while and I've had no problems. I recently moved servers as part of an upgrade and my site was slower for a while, but support have been very helpful in resolving CPU loading issues.

I have used this host for many years now and have always thought it was a great service. Support is quick and knowledgeable, and everything seems to work nearly all the time.
