Hosting Reviews for Doteasy

Asked about domains before I bought them by phone and even by email and was never told the information I asked apparently. Now DOTEASY is trying to charge me an extra $15 per domain to transfer out when I have asked about all this well over a month ago and was put off apparently because all this is hidden in their terms.

I have been using Doteasy for over 10 years and have grown my business drastically while using their hosting services. I have always found their customer service to be top notch. When you combine their responsiveness with the 100% up time I have experienced, you can see why I have been with them for this long.

I have always been impressed with Doteasy's support and uptime. I have been with them for years and have yet to experience any service downtime. They do not offer 24/7 phone or Live Chat support, but their team is very knowledgeable and helpful, and my email tickets were all answered in a timely manner. I have been with hosts that offer 24/7 support but their team aren't as knowledgeable and have very often left me more frustrated and confused. Doteasy's features are sufficient for any small-medium sized websites and the best thing is they throw in a free domain name for as long as my hosting is active. Can't beat that! Definitely would recommend Doteasy!

Nothing is easy with this company. Lots of fees hidden here and there that seem to change at will.

Customer service is awful. Website templates are terrible. I have nothing good to say about Doteasy.

The first part of this review centers around my hosting experience. The second half, around DOTASY from a business practice perspective.

When I signed up over 10 years ago DOTEASY had too-good-to-be-true pricing. Basic web hosting was free. I registered several domains but only developed two. At some point in the past three years the two websites I had up and running for over 8 years without a hitch went down, but the outage was not brought to my attention. I discovered the problem by visiting my own websites, and I have no idea if the websites had been down for weeks or months at that point. Unfortunately, I could not get into my FTP to correct either problem. In one case, my website had been hacked to allow adult content, and a warning from my browser indicated shortly thereafter that the site was blocked because of malicious code. In another case, a website I developed went down because DOTEASY apparently went through a migration that impacted the way their hosting servers were configured. My experience in obtaining support for the two different issues, which occurred about six months apart, were worlds apart.

In one case I contacted DOTEASY and my client's website was up two days later. In the other case, the one having to do with the hacking of my own website, DOTEASY refused to help because they said password protection was my responsibility, and that if there was any malicious code on their hosting servers as my browser was warning me, their servers would have rejected the changes. In other words, they were accusing me of making up the threat of malicious code, sure that it warranted no real investigation because there had been no suspicious activity. The outcome of that protracted support conversation was that any problems with the site were mine and mine alone to correct. Eventually, instead restoring my website from a backup on the FTP server, I began to see a 403 error with the words "forbidden".

Around that time, DOTEASY FTP servers became incompatible with the version of CS3 Dreamweaver I was using for FTP access. When I told them that I couldn't access the FTP server to restore my website from my older software/computer, they offered no alternative FTP access suggestions. I had to upgrade my computer and my software to fix the problem.

When I finally got into my own FTP folder I found my website was fully intact but with the addition of HTaccess files that I had to delete before my website content came back up. Apparently, it was just easier for DOTEASY to insert access denials into my FTP folder than to restore my site after the security breach. DOTEASY cleaned out the adult content I initially saw there but they didn't take the extra step of resetting the content to enable my website to come back up.

For the better part of three years my personal website was down! Unfortunately, the hosting problems don't end there. Three months ago, a client site went down with a "not found" error. I found the files for the website fully intact but they had been put into the wrong directories. Mind you, this site had been working correctly for over 10 years without a hitch, and had not been updated by myself in any way before it went down (to suggest I had anything to do with it). Still went down due to a misconfiguration not of my own doing. Once again, DOTEASY did not provide a courtesy notification of any outages or server updates that might have necessitated that I re-validate the operability of the website. The upshot is, if you host with DOTEASY prepare to visit your own website every single day. Don't assume it's online just because it's been there for years. Without warning it can go down and it will stay that way without any notification on DOTEASY's part even if the site now contains malicious code.

Now for my experience dealing with DOTEASY's business and billing practices.

I logged into DOTEASY every year on a domain-by-domain basis to renew the registration and I never once saw a reference to hosting fees associated with a defunct domain I lost back in 2011 — until 2015! In my experience if you receive an email reminder from DOTEASY concerning a website domain expiration, it is possible to click "renew" and it will go straight to the payment upon login. There is another spot for Group Manager, for those who register more than one domain, and there you are expected to create a separate login and a master payment method. Only there do you see a summary of all domains you own and the invoice and support history associated with them. If you make the mistake of renewing on a domain-by-domain basis using a DOTEASY email link without logging into the Group Manager you may not appreciate that you are paying renewal fees on services linked to long-defunct domains.

The way DOTEASY is set up if you wish to authorize an auto-renewal of your web domain you are not just consenting to renew the domain registration once per year but also any services that have been attached to it. To add to the potential for confusion, those services will invariably run on a separate annual billing cycle even for "monthly" service fees! For DOTEASY users who have been on $0 basic web hosting, it may not occur to check for additional service fees unless or until one becomes aware that basic hosting services are no longer free of charge. But whether you will catch on when DOTEASY implements "mandatory" hosting changes is the real question. Every notice is email based and if you don't receive it, you're SOL.

After trying to figure out why I so often feel blindsided by fees I do not expect, I began to appreciate that miscommunications are facilitated, in part, by the fact that DOTEASY will send out an email with a title that reads like it is time to renew one's domain when, in fact, the actual content of the message may go on to refer to changes of fees or service terms, too. DOTEASY communications could do a much better job separating out their subjects and titles so that it is possible for their customers to appreciate even before they open an email what the nature or the urgency level of the notice really is. Unfortunately, DOTEASY doesn't make EASY what ought to be.

Now here's where it gets downright tricky: DOTEASY appears to access any payment method on file even if the page you have logged into is configured to appear as if you are only entering payment for one particular web domain. I know this only because, having lost the domain registration rights to a domain in 2011, I never logged in to authorize or update a payment method connected to that domain. To this day, in fact, I have not set up a so-called master payment method to cover all my accounts hosted by DOTEASY. The only way DOTEASY could have billed me to host a domain years after I lost it, without any updates to the payment method in the interim, was to BORROW my most recently used payment method from another transaction (domain registration) for the purpose of sharing that payment method without my knowledge!

I am only now beginning to appreciate that DOTEASY is phasing out their no-cost basic hosting in favor of a fee-only hosting operation. In view of the borderline service and limited support options — and the staggering amount of SPAM your domain emails will receive on a daily basis if you don't foot over $80 per year for spam protection service, which is a separate fee entirely — DOTEASY is no longer a good value.

At best DOTEASY engages in unethical business practices. That is because failure to respond to an email notice constitutes YOUR consent for DOTEASY to impose and thereafter bill for ALL subsequent services even if they, not you, initiated the service or rate changes.

SUMMARY:

1) DOTEASY can and will change terms and fees without making clear how long the customer has to respond to or opt out of the proposed change.

2) DOTEASY will display hosting plans and invoices if you login to your domain management account, but there is no option to receive a quarterly or monthly summary of activity via email.

3) Under the DOTEASY Group Manager there is no readily-apparent means to totally remove a payment method associated with an individual domain or to decline future hosting services on an domain you no longer intend to host and/or register with them.

4) DOTEASY does not prompt users who have failed to login for a period of time to review TOS changes that may have occurred since the customer's last known login.

5) If for some reason you need to make an update to a payment method, you will not be allowed to do so without checking a box giving DOTEASY the ability to use that payment method in perpetuity. In other words, DOTEASY provides an "opt in" but no identifiable "opt out".

The bottom line on my review? Run, don't walk, away from DOTEASY!

The support is very helpful, even helping you solve a problem that turns out not to be their problem. I'm very grateful for their excellent service and support for all these years. Doteasy is a superior provider of ecommerce store fronts and I'm impressed at how easy it is to create a fashion related business with all sorts of free modules to assist even a beginner in setting up and selling.

We have been using this for a basic no-frills host for 11 years. We have never had any issues. They send a reminder each year to renew the domain name.

It is the most economical host I have found. Basic hosting cost $1.95 per month when paid for yearly. The domain name is an additional $25 per year.

I have used others who use a "introductory" price then get billed for $21.95 instead of $3.95 monthly. Doteasy does NOT change prices.

Doteasy is horrible! I purchased a 2-year domain registration because it came with free hosting. After a year, they were charging $24 for basic hosting which I thought was included since the price I paid to register my domain was considerably higher then your standard pricing.

I decided to find a suitable alternative and allowed doteasy hosting to expire. After it expired, I planned on using the remaining time on my domain and getting hosting somewhere else. Not the case. Doteasy removed all of the previous options in my member account so that I didn't have any access to my DNS to redirect the IP address. I contacted them for support. I got an email shortly after stating that I needed to pay $24 plus a $15 of late fee to receive support. I'm a paid customer with one more year remaining on my domain!!!

In addition, they tried charging $24 to my company credit card when DOTEASY HAD NO AUTHORIZATION to do so. Fortunately the credit card was declined since it does not get funded unless there are scheduled expenses. Currently I'm unable to access my website or get any support from doteasy though I have fully paid my domain. I'm losing money everyday my site is down, getting no support all of while doteasy uses my site to advertise for themselves.

What a piece of work! DOTEASY IS DISHONEST AND NOT TO BE TRUSTED!

every dollar they can get. They will lock up your domain names, (this is never obvious until you actually

try to transfer your domain name away from them). They will deduct hidden charges you didn't know about,

and charge you a huge fee (we were charged over US$100.00) for giving you back your own domain name if it

happens to have expired, even for one day. They are fraudsters, swindlers and tricksters of the worst kind.

They ripped us off and they will rip you off.

We were doteasy customer for about 5 years and with every year service get worse and worse, so we finally deflected to a more reliable hosting company.

If you running website that nobody cares about and it is ok for you to be off-line for a few days, then you can consider this company for yourself.

Otherwise consider the following experience:

Security of doteasy shared server were bridged twice in past 6 months

Doteasy customer care replies 1 time in 24h for tickets. So any issue you may have can be resolved only in 2-3 days or longer.

Doteasy may take action to disable accesses to your site while stay unreachable to resolve the problem.

Last thing I want to mention that Doteasy bills in Usd and keep using exchange as 1.3, so make sure that you billed what you expect, not 30% more.

Overall it is hard to recommend this company any longer, even for non-critical hosting.

I'm still getting billing emails... seriously, how does one stop service with these people!

They even sent me a link, for a web email to fill out... I wrote a long email, only for the form to tell me that th domains do not exsist, erasing EVERYTHING I wrote down.

As for their service, their folks seem to be incompetant as well!

I have already reviewed Doteasy, but just had another less than stellar experience with them while trying to transfer away my last domain.

They don't make it easy, and in this case neglected my request until it was tool late and the domain is expired. Now they inform me that the have a hold on it for 40 days. Plus the offer the ominous warning that should I wait until the 40 days is over, someone might snap up the domain and I could lose it forever.

I am so completely dissatisfied with Doteasy that I can't describe. Doteasy's sneaky tactics to keep customer from getting out from under them feels like blackmail.

In short, my suggestion is to avoid Doteasy at all costs.

I've used DotEasy for a variety of sites for about 7 years, and their service has gotten steadily worse.

At first, my MySQL tables would spontaneously turn up empty -- lots of data lost. Complaints to support only elicited a shrug. They suggested I switch from Movable Type to some other no-name blogging software.

I'm paying for PHP5, but getting PHP4; that's due to their policy of charging longtime customers an additional fee to access new features. Crazy!

Their documentation is years out of date.

Support is polite, but they've been unable to resolve many of my complaints. It's gotten to the point that I've filed complaints with the Better Business Bureau about them.

I'm in the process now of moving all of my sites to DreamHost, which has been much easier to use.

I have been with Doteasy for more than six or seven years. I used to be satisfied with the service, but the last couple of years have really gone downhill.

Support has never been a strong point from Doteasy, but responses went from 4 plus hours at first to well over a day as of late. I will admit that they would work to find a solution with you, but you'd go through two or three rounds of how this is something that you have done and NOT a problem on their side. Once you could finally convince them that it was a DotEasy issue, (did you know that the results of phpinfo() can be wrong? ;) ) they would eventually find a solution.

DotEasy is just a web-hosting all-you-can-eat buffet. The problem is there are better buffets for less money, and much better buffets if you pony up a buck or two more.

Lastly, I have to echo what other reviewers have said about trying to transfer domains away from Doteasy; it sure is NotEasy! While they'll sell you a domain locking service for $7 a year, they don't tell you that the domain will automatically be locked for free anyway. And then re-locked anytime you make a change to the contact details.

When I asked DotEasy support (and I quote my question as well as their response) "why can I not find any mention of the automatic relocking in the event of contact information change?"

DotEasy support replied "We have elected to not mention this anywhere."

Well that's just being right upfront with the customer, huh?

There are many better choices of web-hosts other than Doteasy. For instance, I have moved on to Fused Network and the difference is night and day.

After five years of hosting and registering several domains and sites with Doteasy, i found another provider that met my more advanced needs at lower prices (Dreamhost). Doteasy was fine when i was just running a simple HTML site with a few extras with 100 Mb "free hosting" at $45/2 years. They offered this in 2004 and haven't changed at all with the times. And that was fine, even with sluggish service response, 'cuz hey, i wasn't paying much.

Well, i went to transfer the domain to the new registrar right after receiving a renewal notice, and doteasy put up all kinds of hidden barriers, locking the domain without my knowledge or consent and allowing it to expire before they replied to my support requests, saying, "there's nothing we can do now, it expired, you need to renew it with us (pay $25 min.) or let it go blank for 40+ days before registering with your new provider, taking a chance someone else would snatch it up."! I am still in shock at their deceptive business practices and unwillingness to make adjustments for mistakes they made. There were no posted transfer instructions or stated documents describing their auto-lock policies (apparently, you have to manually use the special support forms to contact support and request them to unlock the domain, a process that can take 1-2 days).

They were fine when i was their loyal customer, but using deceptive practice to try to keep me (with my website/domain as hostage) is downright bad business if it's not illegal.
