Hosting Reviews for Lithium Hosting

Chris Fejes 29 Mar 17

I began using Lithium for my private sites based off word-of-mouth advertising. I used them for several years. They had a few issues that led to downtime (I think that was 2013 or so? Hard to remember), but everything seemed to come back up quickly. I encountered a few little quirks, but they responded promptly to tickets and got our issues resolved.

Fast forward several years, and our contract web developer at work is telling us we need a VPS. I suggested Lithium based off prior experience, and got a VPS spooled up.

Troy was very helpful when we had some issues (user error not hardware or software), and when the web dev turned out to be a little less on the ball than we thought, Troy even offered free advice that he shouldn't have without managed services. Based off the technical ability of the web dev, we ended up purchasing managed hosting services for the VPS from him anyway.

I've been keeping an eye on the tickets our web dev files, and our site wouldn't be up without his help. The VPS is fast and very reasonably priced; the managed hosting support is a tremendous bargain for our organizations needs. In the past three months, we've had 100% uptime.

I volunteer for a nonprofit group that advocates for disabled people. Our site was down for several days when the servers at Lithium Hosting supposedly got hacked. Then a month later, our site was down for four days when a config file was not set up properly by Lithium. It took my boss several emails to finally get Troy Siedsma, Mr. One Stop owner and fix it all, to take responsibility for the file but he never apologized or refunded any hosting fees. Despite the fact that he violated the 99.7% up time by taking our site down for four days, he was unrepentant.

When my boss told him he violated FTC regulations about false advertising, and he violated the ADA by not giving her reasonable accommodations, he fired our nonprofit and gave her 14 days to move the site. When she complained to Paypal, he suspended our site and our email completely, without any notice. He said that contacting a third party to handle a dispute cost him "research time" and charged the nonprofit $35. Who takes down a website when the issues are in dispute? My boss had already requested a refund from him and he refused.

I cannot email from our accounts or check our email and neither can my boss. I think that Mr. Siedsma is vindictive, retaliatory and that he has no ethics or morals. I am glad we have moved to another hosting company.

Lastly, Mr. Siedsma put a "suspended account" page in big yellow black and white lettering to try to shame us. He is the one who should be ashamed.

Zero stars.

Lithium Hosting's Response

Hello, thank you for taking the time to share your experience with Lithium Hosting. I would like to address a few points in your review.

1) The first point I'd like to address is that the person writing this review is not and has never been a customer of Lithium Hosting. She's writing this post on behalf of or under direction of her boss. This review is second hand information and should be taken as such. I'll still address your review with my points below.

2) Our servers were not hacked. There wasn't any downtime during the migration which was actually due to hardware upgrades. Your boss actually sent a support ticket thanking us as seen here: Again, not sure why she thought the server was hacked but that wasn't the case at all.

3) The site was down due to a mistake on our end with a config file. This resulted in your site being inaccessible for some users for a few days. The configuration error caused the site to be so slow that if more than a couple of people were accessing it, it would throw a 500 error. This was addressed to us on 9/28/2015 after Google Webmaster tools sent your boss an email on the 26th of September after 4 errors were detected in 24 hours. That's roughly 3 days of slow loading or 500 errors on the site and not actual server downtime. Again, we apologized and admitted the mistake was ours and appropriately fixed the file to ensure the website was accessible again. See here: and here: This wasn't a direct violation of our 99.7% uptime guarantee since that applies to the server and infrastructure, not each site individually.

4) There weren't any FTC violations for false advertising as we don't advertise anywhere. Our business has grown over the last 9 years by word of mouth of our satisfied customers. Your boss read our "About Us |" page and misunderstood the references to the Data Centers our servers are hosted in. She assumed that meant we owned the datacenters which are clearly labeled as Hivelocity and Hetzner. We never misrepresented our role in providing hosting. We are not a reseller of hosting, we 100% manage and control the servers we use, nobody is selling us hosting that we resell to our customers. We do Resell domains through Resellerclub as we are not an ICANN accredited Registrar.

5) We asked your boss to find a new home for the website after she repeatedly threatened to file lawsuits and after she repeatedly accused us of fraud. Her actions were determined to be abusive and we asked that she find a new home for the website by October 15th 2015, the end of the pre-paid billing term.

6) When we notified your boss of our decision to end our relationship with her as allowed by our Terms of Service, she disputed the 5 months of payments with Paypal. As soon as the payment disputes were received, we suspended all active services in accordance with our Terms of Service regarding Payment Disputes and/or Chargebacks. The suspension automatically places a suspended page on the server like this one: This page gets displayed on any customer's site that abuses our TOS, fails to make a payment or disputes payments. We did not target your site in an attempt to shame you, that's not how we operate.

7) We also did not charge a $35.00 fee, this is a screenshot of the Invoices page, at no time was any charge placed on the account for $35.00.

8) Lastly, you can see that the payments were refunded. After your boss disputed the payments, we offered a partial refund to cover the 3 days of downtime. She refused and escalated to Paypal as a Paypal Claim to have them decide the outcome of the dispute. At this time, she had sent more emails of an abusive nature with insults and more threats including a threat to have Paypal close our business account. We decided it was best to just put this behind us and move on and refunded all monies and closed her account permanently.

The price may seem too good to be true and that is because it is. The uptime isn't the best. Outages lasting upwards of a day. My biggest problem is customer service. My account was terminated a week after I paid for a full year. I was told by support after contacting them that there was a script that was fishing for account information (untrue). They refused to refund me for my year of service that I didn't receive. I find the timing a little too convenient for them. Do yourself a favor and stay away from Lithium Hosting.

Lithium Hosting's Response

Hello, we've only just acquired the ability to comment on our reviews. Thank you for taking the time to post one about your experience with Lithium Hosting. I was trying to find your account and can't find a Jeff or Jeffrey Brown. We have never cancelled or terminated a customer's account one week into a 1 year or longer payment term and not offered a partial refund.

Please provide us with your name and/or domain name so we can look into this issue. If for some reason a refund was never provided, we'll gladly send you a check or Paypal payment for the monies owed.

Just cancelled service with Lithium after a major server outage knocked all of my sites, and the sites of many other Lithium customers offline for almost 24 hours. This is completely inexcusable in this day and age of RAID drives, multiple server farm locations, and offsite backup storage. Don't even consider any hoster that has a known outage lasting more than a couple of hours. Awful, unreliable service. And not very forthcoming about the causes during the outage period, either. Stay away.
